OFFICE OF TRANSITION INITIATIVES
This program ended on September 30, 2007. The highlights of the program include:

Michael Yates, the Director of USAID in Bolivia, delivers school supplies to students in the
city of El Alto where USAID´s Office of Transition Initiatives provided equipment and
infrastructure improvements to public schools.
- Training 160 staff in 8 departmental governments on the use of a new administrative and financial accounting system to facilitate better oversight and increased transparency in the management of public resources. The system also increases efficiency and sound financial management by helping prefecture staff project expenditures for both current and future fiscal years.
- Providing 6,000 youth, women and other un- and under-employed Bolivians with vocational training, with 1,000 finding permanent employment in established businesses and 5,000 other beneficiaries creating or participating in sustainable microenterprises.
- Supporting the education sector through the rehabilitation of over 200 schools serving more than 30,000 students in El Alto, the Altiplano, and other marginalized communities in Bolivia, including classroom rehabilitation, installation of computer laboratories, and the distribution of classroom furniture.
- In collaboration with central and municipal government partners and FEJUVE, completing secondary natural gas networks in 3 districts of the city of El Alto, benefiting 20,000 students, hospital workers and patients, and other members of the Alteño community.
- Supporting initiatives designed to bridge the digital divide in marginalized areas of Bolivia by helping university, business, and local government partners establish internet centers in rural areas of La Paz, Cochabamba, and Santa Cruz to the benefit of over 15,000 students, local producers, hospital and municipal workers, and members of the general population.
